TYPHOON TRIAL

Every towel, rug, blanket used to try to soak up the water.  We had to spin them dry in the washer 3 times before we gave up and made a dike with the towels to keep the water from flowing downstairs.
Then we used brooms, and a squeegee to sweep the water into the CR which is about 2 inches lower than these rooms.  The buckets were emptied at least four times from the water that was flowing from up stairs.  Then we had to sweep the water in the first level to the CR down there!

Apartment Checks

 

 Checking the Sister's apartment for signs of break-ins and for safety.  This is where they tried to get in the back door that doesn't have a locked gate.

These pictures below show an Elder's Apartment of four....they got an inspection number of 1 out of 12!  Such a mess!

This is the man I showed on the blog before being helped down the hill in his wheelchair.  He has been coming to church regularly with his wife and kids (daugther in front) and he has miraculously been healed and is able to walk.  We bought some sunglasses and peanut butter from them.

Here I am with a couple of young girls from the village and Alecsandria the 16 yr-old who is getting the new house with her mom and aunt.

Corner Feather Business

 The corner with the wash tub tipped over on the top left of the picture is where they wash and dye feathers.  

Then they stitch them together in yard length strips and hang them to dry on the wires.  

We pass this way almost daily.  I decided to buy some feathers for WizKidz Preschool at home for projects.

 Such fun bright colors!  In the markets you can buy about a dozen feathers for about a dollar.  I got a yard of each color for about a dollar!  Wahoo!  No middle man here!

Second Typhoon This Week!

See that marvelous drain in the corner of this deck?

 The deck hold about 16-18 inches of water when it's plugged and it flows under the door into the bedroom and all over the upstairs....and then heads downstairs!

House arrest....asked to stay in.  So we were cooking and dining by candlelight.  At least we had some natural light for about another half an hour.

Language Speaking Assessment Pilot Program Kick-off

LSA - A VERY NICE CHANGE OF PACE!

Elder Rajan and another Elder on the other side of the room....They were all a little nervous thinking it was some kind of test, but it ended up being kind of fun showing off their Tagalog skills.

The native Filipinos just hanging out together while their companions who are learning Tagalog took the assessments.

We went through lots of bakery goodies in four days!

A great gathering place....and to think we get to do this every three months for three years!
Well we won't be here for three years but the pilot program will go that long.   Our next time will be in December.

Sister JoAnn Schlager from Missouri is such a wonderful friend and mentor!  I just love her!!  She is like a sister to me.  She will go home in February and I won't know what to do without her.  She and her husband were the couple who showed us the ropes when we came and got us settled.  They were assigned out where we are and then were asked to move into the city and be the Mission Office Secretaries.

Me and Sister Strebel from California.  She is an amazing young woman who is so fun and a terrific missionary who just happens to be Kami Williams and Molly McCall's cousin.  She goes home in about 6 weeks.  

Moving the Elders

I didn't want to kill myself again and knew that I couldn't just sit by and not help so I called out to about a half dozen young kids and asked them to help carry stuff up the hill and told them I would pay them each 10 pesos!

This family helped guard the missionaries stuff while they took the truck full of stuff to the new apartment.

After I paid them their 10 pesos, I asked them all. "What are you going to buy with your money?"

This cute boy in the purple said instantly...."FOOD!"  I gave him some pesos for his little brother hiding in the back too.

 This is a picture of the landlord of the old apartment who is a member of the church and temple worker.  Her husband spent 20 years working in Saudi Arabia coming home only very little, while she raised her 3 kids.  Today they own about four apartments and her three married, educated children live right there as well.  They are teachers etc. and other professionals but even with that sacrifice what they have is still very little.  The baby is her grandson and is 18 months and it's not a very good picture but this cute little guy counted to ten in English and knew all his colors!  I was very impressed.

 More families living under the freeways....even worse than the squatters!

When I cleaned it, I even took the time to fold the end of the toilet paper into a nice point like they do at nice hotels.....hahaha

This was the temple with the moon shining through the night clouds after FHE on Monday night.

Mission Home in Corinthian Gardens

 This is a very beautiful subdivision....first time we'd been here.  First time to see anything that even resembled a neighborhood like in the states.  We don't see this EVER where we serve!

 The way was so muddy but the people were very welcoming.

 This cute little one-month old guy was listening in on our discussion.  The mom removed the blue mosquito netting off him long enough to catch this sweet picture.

The mom of this little guy is below reading a scripture or two.  The baby is her fourth son and she, her husband and the oldest boy is soon to be baptized.

This Sister and her son lived a little more in town in actually one of the nicer homes we've been in.

 Manila Temple at night reminds us that although we have a bad week here and there, 

this is what it's all about!
